The Historic Emblem

UMR’s Historic Emblem may be used with marketing materials that are designed to communicate UMR’s history or to communicate with alumni. The Historic Emblem is not a “logo? and should not be used as such. The UMR patch or the UMR word mark should be used.

UMR’s Historic Emblem includes several symbols that convey meaning to our alumni and friends:

  • The crossed hammers remind us of our founding as the School of Mines and Metallurgy in 1870.
  • The gear, while signifying our historic emphasis in the mechanics of engineering, also challenges all alumni to pursue new ideas and knowledge, accept civic responsibility and serve society.
  • The chain signifies the strong link all graduates share through the ages.

UMR's Joe Miner
Joe Miner

Joe Miner

Joe Miner is the official mascot of the University of Missouri-Rolla. Rugged and individualistic, Joe Miner personifies the spirit of the old west and the determination to succeed. His character is closely tied with the school’s founding in 1870 as the University of Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy.

Primary usage: Joe Miner’s primary usage is to promote intercollegiate athletics and UMR’s sports programs in general. Recognized student organizations, student design teams and the MSM-UMR Alumni Association also use the Joe Miner image, and the image is also used with some student recruitment publications. Because the Joe Miner image is closely associated with UMR sports, student activities, alumni activities and student recruitment activities, academic and administrative units should not incorporate the Joe Miner graphic into their graphic identities.

Questions or comments about UMR’s graphic identity should be directed to the UMR Publications Office.
